Conflict Management
Conflict management is the process of finding a peaceful resolution to a problem between two parties. This may be one of the more undervalued competencies, but I consider it to be vital since conflicts come up all the time. Not all conflict is bad either, and sometimes conflict can be beneficial and present new ideas that may not have previously been considered. Knowing how and when to intervene in a conflict is just as important as resolving the issue.
Conflict Management in Leadership
A leader can use conflict management to their benefit in a couple of ways. The first one we all think about is resolving that conflict and making sure there are no lingering resentments. But another way is say if you're having a meeting and someone brings up an idea and another person disagrees with the idea thinking it to be stupid. The leader can then step in and ask if they have a better idea that they would like to share, which can then lead to new ideas coming from the group. So knowing how to manage a given conflict is important to the leader, but so is knowing how to use conflict to the benefit of the team or organization.

Reflection
Conflict management is important to the Organizational Leadership degree because as leaders, we will likely end up dealing with conflict fairly often. Knowing how to use or resolve that conflict to the betterment of those involved and the organization as a whole is important. There are many ways to deal with conflict, but unless you’ve tried to find other ways of dealing with conflict, then the chance is that you’re going to deal with it the same way you always have. Learning about conflict management and all the ways to deal with it will help you grow as a leader.
I’ve learned that dealing with conflict isn’t always a bad thing and if harnessed properly, can be a huge help. I’ve also realized that just because someone makes a comment that sounds like an attack doesn’t mean that it is. You always want to use an empathetic ear when listening to people in order to understand better where they’re coming from. Listen to both sides of the conflict, ask open-ended questions, and avoid blaming anyone. It’s too easy just to blame someone rather than hear them out, but this can cause more trouble, so it’s better to try and understand both sides.
